Tom Cox is a 1988 graduate of Ft. Wayne Northrop High School and a 1993 graduate of Ball State University. He received his Master’s degree in 2006 from the American Band College of Southern Oregon University (Ashland, Oregon) and was the first ever winner of the Coups de Vent Award (Valedictorian) from the American Band College.  Mr. Cox took over leadership of the Goshen Band program in 2001 and has seen his ensembles place in the Indiana state finals in marching band, concert band, jazz ensemble, winter percussion and winter guard. Goshen is one of the few schools in the state to have state finalists in all of these areas. He has been named a “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” numerous times and in 2009 was named to the Sousa Foundation’s “Legion of Honor” for outstanding contributions in music education. Mr. Cox has served fifteen years on the Indiana State School Music Association State Board and currently is the chairman of Zone 2. In 2016 Mr. Cox was named the Michiana Outstanding Music Educator and in 2017 he was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters’ Fraternity. Currently Mr. Cox’s teaching responsibilities at Goshen High School include Wind Ensemble, Advanced Crimson Jazz Ensemble, Crimson Marching Band, Symphonic Band and Concert Band. Mr. Cox also oversees the Crimson Percussion Ensemble and assists with the sixth, seventh and eighth grade concert bands at Goshen Middle School.

Josh Kaufman graduated from Goshen High School as valedictorian in 1992. He played baritone and euphonium with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from 1993 to 1995 and was Brass Sergeant of the World Champion 1995 Cavaliers.

Mr. Kaufman received his B.A. in physics and music education from Goshen College in 1997 and his Master of Music in saxophone performance from the University of Northern Colorado in 2000, graduating magna cum laude from both institutions. Mr. Kaufman taught high school and middle school band for Sheridan School District in southwest Denver from 1999 to 2005. During his time at Sheridan High School, the marching band was twice state champion and twice runner-up in their class, and the concert band made state finals twice. Mr. Kaufman began teaching at Goshen High School in 2006. His teaching responsibilities include Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Crimson Jazz Ensemble, Crimson Marching Band, and assisting the Winter Guards. The Wind Ensemble made their first trip to Concert Band State Finals in Mr. Kaufman’s first year at Goshen High School, and the ensemble has returned 10 times since. Mr. Kaufman is proud to take Goshen High School’s 2nd concert band and 2nd jazz band to ISSMA contest in Group I and receive gold ratings. Mr. Kaufman also assists with the concert bands at Goshen Middle School.

Max Mault graduated from Wawaka High School, Wawaka, Indiana in 1964 in a class of 17 students and joined the Army soon after.  In 1966 he attended the US Naval School of Music and from 1966-69 he was in the 74th Army Band. Mr. Mault was honored to be the Army bugler in Vietnam from 1968-69.

Post military Mr. Mault toured the country in a band called “Syndrome” and then settled down to get his BA in Music in 1976 from Goshen College.  He was hired immediately at Goshen Community Schools and received his Masters in Music from Ball State in 1982.

Mr. Mault became the Band Director at Town Crest in 1982-83 while assisting at the High School.  In 1986-87 his band of 130-140 student made state finals for the first time. Since 1990 no GMS band has ever received less than 1st place.  In 1989 he directed an Auxillary Band that was selected top in state and he also from the All State Marching Band that same year. In 1997-98 Mault became co-director of Goshen High School band along with Dave Plank.  

Although Mr. Mault officially retired in 2016 after 40 years in the district, he returned to GMS as the Assistant Band Director providing his knowledge and expertise to the up and coming directors and students. During his tenure with GCS, Mault married his lovely wife, Yvonne, in 1979 and raised 5 children, 4 boys and 1 girl.  He now also has 2 grandchildren.

Stephen R. Snyder graduated from Pickerington High School in Pickerington Ohio in 1996.  While there, he was a member of the “Marching Tigers” and performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Tournament of Roses Parade, and multiple NFL games.  He was awarded the Director’s Award his senior year. 

He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and performed with their marching and pep bands while there, graduating in 2001.  He received his Master’s Degree in Music Education from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio in 2015.  Prior to working at Goshen, he worked in Ohio for 10 years as the choir director and assistant band director for Ridgewood Local Schools near Coshocton, Ohio. 

He has been employed by Goshen Community Schools since the fall of 2011.  He currently teaches the band members not in marching band and directs the Concert Band in December as they prepare their Winter Concert.  He also teaches the Men’s Choir, the Advanced Choir with Katie Miller O’Leary, the Crimson Choir, and the Beginning Guitar class.  Additionally, he conducts the Pit Orchestra for the spring musicals.

In his spare time he enjoys learning new instruments and playing disc golf. He and his wife Kristen reside in Goshen and are currently rearing and cherishing their two children, Nathaniel and Katherine.
